La vera fama arriva nel 1990 grazie allo straordinario successo del film Pretty Woman, in cui la Roberts divide lo schermo con Richard Gere. Dal 1991 al 1997 un'insolita carriera altalenante, attraversata da alti e bassi, da cime innevate (Il rapporto Pelican) e fondali bui (Mary Reilly, il più pesante fallimento al botteghino). Poi, nel 1997, Julia decide di tornare alla commedia. Quindi l'ottimo successo de Il matrimonio del mio migliore amico, e le riuscite di Notting Hill e Se scappi ti sposo (nel quale si riunisce la triade sacra Roberts-Gere-Marshall) entrambi del 1999.
